A message travels through Atlanta, and return 50 years later

A message in a bottle sent nearly 50 years ago from New Hampshire has made its way back home, after it traveled more than 1,000 miles to a small island in the Caribbean. The old glass Coke bottle with a folded message inside turned up in Turks andCaicos in 2011. Clint Buffington from Salt Lake City, Utah told ABC News he found it while vacationing there. The cryptic message inside said, "Return to 419 Ocean Boulevard and receive a reward of $150 from Tina, the owner of Beachcomber."Buffington has been hunting and collecting bottles with messages as a hobby since 2007. So far, he has collected more than 80. But this one led him on a special quest."I've never given one back to someone," he told ABC News. "But in this case I knew it was the right thing to do. Just imagine it was a letter from your parents."Buffington said he made it his mission to try and find "Tina," or her family, to return the message and collect the reward.
"I didn’t know if Beachcomber was the name of a boat or a restaurant," Buffington said. "I went through google maps but I didn’t know what I was seeing."Finding the family also proved difficult because "there is an Ocean Boulevard in every state on the coast," he said.Buffington wrote about finding the bottle on his blog, which is about his adventures in message-in-a-bottle collecting, in 2011. He even created an online poll where people could guess what the "Beachcomber" was.Eventually, after a lot of online research and speaking to the county clerk and the tax assessor, Buffington found the original deed of sale for the piece of land that became the Beachcomber Motel. The property was owned by Paul and Tina Tsiatsios of Hampton, New Hampshire.Paul and Tina had since passed away, but he was able to track down their daughter, Paula Pierce, who was still in New Hampshire.Although he made contact with Paula a few years ago, he said he wasn't able to travel to New Hampshire until this year. "I wasn't going to trust this with the mail," he added. On Monday, Buffington finally arrived in New Hampshire and returned the message Pierce, an estimated fifty years after her father dropped it in the ocean.Boy Discovers 45-Year-Old Love Letter In Bottle Addressed to His GrandfatherChildhood Time Capsule Returned to Owner 67 Years LaterPierce couldn't believe it when she saw the 50-year-old letter that her father wrote, she told ABC News. She said her father passed away in December of 1990 and her mother passed away earlier, in November of 1980."My father wasn’t a good speller, so there were a few misspellings in it: He misspelled received, boulevard, and beachcomber," Pierce said. "We don’t know if it was on purpose so he could deny responsibility, or if it was a mistake."Pierce said that she didn't know about the letter in a bottle, but that her husband knew about it this whole time."My father secretly told my husband, who I have known since 1969. He told my husband that he did this soon after he bought the motel, which they did in 1960," Pierce said. "My husband never told any of us."Her father, Paul, did it as a way of showing affection to her mother, Tina, she thinks. "It was a very sweet gesture, he was trying to tease her," Pierce said.Paul was very proud of Tina for running the Beachcomber Motel, she said, but he was also teasing her with the amount of the reward."The joke part of it was that rooms were going for 15 or 20 dollars a night back then, and that was a lot," Pierce said. "So 150 dollars was a lot of money back then."Pierce said she gave Buffington the $150 reward in cash; she thought it was the right thing to do. "It is like completing the circle."

Mourinho charged over comment made by him to a referee

Mourinho charged over referee commentsLondon - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was on Thursday charged with misconduct over comments he made about the referee in charge of this month's Liverpool game, the Football Association has announced.United's outspoken Portuguese boss faces a disciplinary hearing after questioning referee Anthony Taylor's suitability to take charge of the October 17 game at Anfield. The Altrincham-based official's appointment for the Premier League derby had led former English top flight referee Keith Hackett to claim the appointment would place undue pressure on Taylor. And when those comments were put to Mourinho ahead of the match, the United boss said: "I think Mr Taylor is a very good referee but I think somebody with intention is putting such a pressure on him that I feel that it will be difficult for him to have a very good performance."The FA released a statement confirming: "Jose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct in respect of comments he made relating to the appointed match referee, prior to the Liverpool v Manchester United fixture on Monday 17 October 2016."It is alleged his comments were improper and/or brought the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3(1)."Mourinho has until Monday to respond to the charge, the governing body added.New rules were introduced in 2009 in an attempt to crack down on pre-match comments about officials which could be viewed as intimidatory or influential. After the drab goalless draw Mourinho praised the performance of Taylor, whose four bookings in the match all went to United players."Can I speak about the referee without being punished?" he asked the club's press officer. After being given the go-ahead, the Portuguese added: "He had a good game and I am happy for him because people with responsibilities put a lot of pressure on him and it was very difficult for him to have a good performance, which he had."When manager of Chelsea Mourinho was given a suspended stadium ban and a £50 000 fine for his critical comments about referee Robert Madley after Chelsea's defeat at home to Southampton on October 3, 2015.

Jose mourinho humbled by United fans support.

Manchester - Jose Mourinho lauded Manchester United's supporters after his team put the disappointment of their 4-0 humiliation at Chelsea behind them to sink Manchester City in England's League Cup.Sunday's defeat at Chelsea, Mourinho's former club, was United's worst in the league for five years, but they bounced back to beat holders City 1-0 on Wednesday courtesy of Juan Mata's 54th-minute goal.Mourinho made a gesture of apology to United's fans at the end - making a '4-0' symbol with his fingers and lowering his head - and said he had been moved by their backing."We were on a good run of results, but it was a big defeat," said the United manager, whose side had gone six games unbeaten prior to coming off the rails at Stamford Bridge."(They are) numbers that the history of this club doesn't deserve and when I'm in a club my heart belongs to the fans and I felt deeply for them. The reality is that I never had people like these ones."We lost 4-0 and they were supportive. Today the stadium was full of real support and it looks like the love people have for the club is bigger than bad results, bigger than three bad seasons."We must give something back. The players gave everything, but even if we'd lost the feeling was fantastic because the players showed they really care and they fought for the fans."Mourinho spoke to television reporters after the game at Old Trafford, but did not appear at his post-match press conference. United did not offer an explanation. While Mourinho made just four changes to his starting XI, his opposite number, Pep Guardiola, made nine. Both teams disappointed in a drab first half, but it was United who seized the advantage after the break, with Mata sweeping home Zlatan Ibrahimovic's low cross after Paul Pogba had hit the post.City captain Vincent Kompany, one of only two players to keep his place from Sunday's 1-1 draw against Southampton, was substituted at half-time.The Belgian centre-back has been dogged by injuries in recent seasons and Guardiola said he had not felt able to play on."He told us he is tired and not ready to play the second half," explained Guardiola, whose side beat Liverpool on penalties in last season's final prior to his arrival."The important thing is after two years (repeatedly) injured, he played three days ago 70 minutes, today 45 and no injuries."That is a good step, the first step. After we have to see. He felt not good, knowing what happened in the past."Guardiola has now gone six games without victory for the first time in his managerial career, but he said he had "no regrets" about selecting a weakened team."Sometimes it happens in football the managers doesn't win," he said."It is the first time. OK, hopefully it does not happen again, but it is part of our profession. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose."Asked if he had learnt anything during his team's slump, he replied: "The same as when we won 10 games in a row (at the start of the season)."Every match is different. I need to analyse them all. Every team has streaks of good results and bad results. The strange thing is after seven years as a manager, it happens now."But we are still getting to know each other, still improving and we will (improve)."United will host West Ham United in the quarter-finals.

eagle will try and exploit Algerian defense

Nigeria was able to put two goals past Zambia in Ndola a few weeks back and will hope to do more when Match Day Two of the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers resume. The Super Eagles will host Les Fennecs of Algeria at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo [ below ]
looking to take another giant step towards qualifying for a third World Cup on the bounce. It was all guns blazing in the first half against the Chipolopolo as Alexander Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho put the Zambians to the sword. A lot will be required of Nigeria’s attackers when they come up against Algeria who are now in a race against time to get ready for the battle in Uyo.Foxes defence no longer imperviousDefensively, Algeria hasn't been the same since the exit of Majid Bougherra and Rafik Halliche who have been the rock which the Foxes defence was built. Both were outstanding as Algeria quietly went about their business to become the number one team in Africa a few years back. In as much as they have been knocked off their perch in the last Fifa rankings as 2015 AFCON winners Ivory Coast took away the number one spot , sitting at number three, the Foxes want to avoild any further slippingIt isn’t rocket science to note that Les Fennecs greatest strength is in midfield and attack. The likes of Sofiane Feghouli, Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Adlène Guedioura all have excellent creative abilities but the defence is where Algeria have faltered recently. In fact the Algerians were so sloppy that the Indomitable Lions coach Hugo Broos fumed when his team was unable to convert more of the myriad of chances they had, and walk away with a win. He pointed out that the North Africans played uncoordinated in the back, and were repeatedly caught out of position. Persistence did finally pay off as his strikers were able to hit true because his runners did not give up, and weren’t afraid to go at the two centre backs Liasinne Camaduro and skipper Carl Medjani [ below ] .
The latter has bags of experience and is a leader on and off the pitch but isn’t exactly the fastest centre back around and at 31, might be losing a bit of sharpness that he has exhibited over time. This might be a cue to Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to look at how to set up his attack and attack the spaces between the central defence area. The full backs are quite solid but the Eagles need to find a way to get past them.Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam at left back for Les Fennecs will be a formidable task for whoever is up against the 25-year-old. Very strong aerially and in the tackle, he will be a tough nut to crack but if Nigeria’s wingers have a good day then it will be joy for Nigerians. Mehdi Zeffane started at right back in the last game against Cameroon and had a decent game even though Cameroon’s equaliser came from the right channel. He is quite adept defensively and always joins in the attack when needed.Speed will remain Nigeria's not so secret weaponAlgeria is usually lined up with Mahrez on the right side of attack due to his ability to cut in from and do damage with his fantastic left foot and because most of Algeria’s attacking threat comes from the Leicester City man, it means Zeffane usually sits deep to provide protection. This again can play into the Eagles hands if they can exploit the spaces in midfield areas to have a go at the centre backs one on one.The pace of Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon or Victor Moses will be a major weapon if Algeria insists on using the same system they used against Cameroon. Algeria, needing to get their campaign back on track after picking only a point in Bilda will arguably be more offensive on match day in Uyo.This should suit Nigeria well as space will appear in the midfield areas and final third which the Eagles should do well to exploit.Chances will be few and far in-between so the Eagles have to be clinical in front of goal if they are to get the three points at stake.Their finishing certainly has to be better than it was against Tanzania and Zambia - no doubt.Ahmed Musa has finally found his rhythm in the BPL according to his coach Raineri. Nigeria will expect a big game from the speedster come game day. That being said, Algeria might still line up differently in defence as Assai Mandi should be back to stuff up the right back position which was exploited by Cameroon.
Hichem Belkaroui is also expected to be in reckoning to partner skipper Carl Medjani in the centre of defence after missing out of the game against the Indomitable Lions. Algeria will definitely tweak their defence for the away game to Nigeria as they try to steady their ship.No coach big worriesThe defence won’t be the only issue Algeria have to contend with. There is the little matter of who will lead the team to Nigeria for the game after Milovan Rajevac’s departure after the 1-1 draw with Cameroon. The Serbian quit his post after the 1-1 draw against Cameroon earlier this month and the Football Federation Algeria have been looking for coach since then. His departure was said to be due to a player mutiny even though that has been denied by the Algerian football authorities. The 62-year-old only replaced Frenchman Christian Gourcuff in April and was in charge for only two games.Les Fennecs will have their third coach in a year-just like the Super Eagles when Match Day Two of the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers hits the surface of the Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo in November. Former Cameroun coach Paul Le Guen was touted to be Rajevac’s replacement but that turned out to be mere paperwork. Belgian Marc Wilmots, who last handled the Belgian national side looked to have a deal in place to take charge but that didn’t cross the line as well.French man Philipe Troussier and Serbian Safet Susic have also been mentioned in the local press in Algeria although nothing concrete has come from the Federation as yet.Whoever gets the job will have a herculean task of getting the troops ready for the showdown in Uyo. To make matters worse, as the clock keeps running the assignment keeps getting harder with every tick.A win for Nigeria will see her path clearer towards qualification while an Algeria loss will trigger panic stations for Les Fennecs who made it to the last World Cup in Brazil, and expect to be in Russia as well.News Headlines

Pres. Buhari Will Surprise Nigerians in 2017

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enalamah, yesterday, said the results of the efforts by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration will surprise Nigerians in 2017.The minister, who was in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital spoke with newsmen at the 8th Session of the National Council on Industry, Trade and Investment.Enalamah said the Federal government is strifing to  end the current economic recession. He said:”You will start seeing result at the end of this year and early next year. As far as I am concerned, next year is a year of results. All the work we are doing will start yielding results from this quarter.“The level of delivery in 2017 will suprise everybody. People may be saying we are not doing anything but it is impossible for a man to start broadcasting a plan we haven’t really put together well.”The Minister however, stated that the strategic focus of the ministry’s master plan for Diversification and Growth of the Nigerian Economy is: “Partnering with Private and Development Capital to Leverage and Catalyze Resources for diversification and growth.”According to the Minister, ”The challenge in every economy is that of infinite demands and finite resources. With limited resources therefore, the Diversification and Growth plan, otherwise known as the MITI Plan is based on a partnership with the private sector.”He emphasized that based on resource constraints and low price of commodities, including oil, it is an urgent necessity to partner with the private sector so as to leverage and catalyse resources and development capital.According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of the Presidential Council on Ease-of Doing Business (PEBES). We, as Nigerians, must see the connection. The global perception is that this country is a tough environment in which to do business. We must change this negative perception. Positive perceptions will attract investors, capital, technology and best practices.Enelamah explained that already, we are seeing results of these efforts at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), a parastatal under the Ministry, with the 24-hour online registration of businesses.

Manchester United Thumped at Stamford Bridge 4-0

Manchester United manager accuses Antonio Conte of trying to humiliate himMourinho infuriated by opposite number’s response to fourth goal José MourinhoAntonio Conte Manchester UnitedChelseaJosé Mourinho, left, and Antonio Conte after Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Manchester United; both managers chose not to elaborate on what was said. Photograph: Jed Leicester/BPI/Rex/ShutterstockDominic Fifield at Stamford Bridge@domfifieldSunday 23 October 2016 21.36 BSTJosé Mourinho accused Antonio Conte of trying to humiliate him as he endured his worst defeat in English football on his return to Chelsea, and tensions spilled over into the tunnel post-match as back-room staff members of both clubs clashed.Manchester United conceded after just 30 seconds to Pedro Rodríguez and succumbed 4-0 at Stamford Bridge , potentially losing their centre-half Eric Bailly to a serious knee injury en route, with Mourinho berating his team’s “incredible mistakes” at the back. The Portuguese had been infuriated by Conte’s attempts to whip up the home support after N’Golo Kanté scored Chelsea’s fourth goal, and confronted his opposite number as they shook hands at the final whistle.Mourinho, speaking in Italian, appeared to tell Conte he should behave like that “at 1-0, not at 4-0”, and suggested he had actually been seeking to humiliate him in front of his former fans. Conte denied that had been his motivation, explaining post‑match that he had simply been seeking to generate a positive reaction from the crowd after his team’s most impressive performance to date under his stewardship. However, when a member of the United coaching staff ignored Conte’s outstretched hand as they turned to retreat down the tunnel, it provoked a heated argument with a member of the Italian’s own back-room team. Both managers choose not to elaborate on their post-match conversation to the media, but neither denied the version of events, picked up on Italian television, when it was put to them. “I think that a private conversation must remain private,” Conte said. “If someone discover something, OK ... but for me the private conversation remains private.“I think that, today, it was right to call on our fans in a moment when I could only hear the supporters of Manchester United [singing] at 4-0. So I called the fans to give the players a great clap after this kind of performance. The players deserved that.“We live with emotions. If you want to cut the emotions, we can stay at home and I will change jobs. It’s important for our fans to push in every moment of the game. When the players deserve it after this performance, it’s right to receive a great clap from the fans.”Mourinho had regularly called upon the crowd at Stamford Bridge to be more raucous in his second spell at the club, which ended with his dismissal in December 2015 when his ailing team were hovering a point above the relegation zone.“You know me: I spoke to Conte, not to you,” the United manager said when asked about the incident. “I’m not the kind of guy to come here and share with you things I don’t want to share. What is between me and Antonio is for us ... or up to him to talk if he wants to. That is his problem. I have no comment.”United, who have not won in London for 17 months, are five points worse off after nine games than they were under Louis van Gaal last season. “I’m not disappointed with the performance, but with the mistakes,” Mourinho said. “If we could delete the defensive mistakes, the performance was good. But when my teams have perfection in their defensive performances, people say that is not important. But the reality is that it is important.“We made an incredible defensive mistake, I say incredible in capitals, in the first minute and then the game is different. It is one of those days when you give the advantage to opponents by doing nothing.“We put ourselves in a situation where we gave Chelsea the game they wanted to play: the block compact and low, as it was in the second half, and wait for the chances on the counter-attack. Football matches start at 0-0, this match started 1-0.” The home crowd only chorused Mourinho, who claimed three Premier League titles in his two spells at the club, once their team led by four goals.Yet Chelsea’s players, who are now a point off the top of the Premier League, clearly delighted in the victory against their former manager and posted a number of photographs on social media showing the entire squad celebrating in the dressing room after the victory.“It’s right to celebrate when you win,” Conte said. “When you work very hard and win, it’s important to celebrate. But I prefer to win a war, not a battle. I have already told my players that United is in the past.“Now we must be focused on Wednesday because there is another important, tough game against West Ham [in the League Cup]. It’s important to celebrate this evening, but then to start to focus on another game.”

That was the summary of Rebecca Manu’s speech last Wednesday at the press gallery of the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.Manu is one of the released 21 Chibok girls abducted over two years ago, precisely on April 14, 2014 by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State. She spoke on behalf of the freed girls. She showed enthusiasm and passion for knowledge. She made several slips while reading her script. Easily noticeable was the repetition of the word “OK!”.Again, Manu, several times said “and then after that”, a phrase that apparently indicated that she was so coached or guided. Very well then.Did she memorize the speech or were all those phrases written on the paper she had? Only Manu could answer the question. But those details didn’t matter. And it also didn’t matter if the girls were preparing for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, SSCE, organized by West African Examination Council, WAEC, before they were abducted. Whether they could speak good English as would-be secondary school leavers was also inconsequential; after all, two years and six months in captivity would have dealt with their psyche and mental competences. What mattered was that by inference, Manu made her point very clear: they needed to be roundly educated. To them, returning home alive and healthy was a miracle. According to Manu, they had given up on their return to their parents. But God’s grace, the relentless efforts and commitment of Buhari on security matters paid off.Starting off with two Christian songs which she led for the girls, she also called for prayers for their colleagues still in captivity.“We are happy for seeing this wonderful day because we didn’t know we could  come back to be members of Nigeria. Let us thank God for His love. Let us pray for the rest of the girls still in Sambisa. Let God help”, she said. How they were catered forAnyone who saw the girls on the first day of their release, penultimate Wednesday, would commend the Federal Government for the attention they were given. Their looks gave them away as people who had just returned from the land of the “dead”. They looked haggard and emaciated but within  one week, the girls’ body symmetry stood out.Said the minister of women affairs, Mrs. Aisha Al-Hassan, who spoke at the occasion:“This indeed a moment that we have been eagerly waiting for. The date 13 October; 2016, will remain a significant one in the annals of history.“All the 21 girls came back looking haggard, weak and emancipated. Doctors were immediately dispatched to examine them and provide prompt medical assistance. Also, personal personal supplies like clothings, toiletries and others were provided fir them. The girls parents were also brought in from Chibok, Borno State. Uncontrolled emotions when the parents met with them.Send them abroad to study – Chibok local government ChairmanTo underscore the importance of the girls’ education, representative of the girls’ parents and Chairman of Chibok local government area, Mr. Ya’aga Yarakuwu, expressed gratitude to God, the President and the Nigerian security apparatus for ensuring the safe return of the girls. While highlighting the challenges bedeviling the community which he said included lack of roads and schools, Yarakuwa appealed to Buhari  to come to the aid of the community, urging for deployment of more security personnel to the area.He appealed to the President to take the girls abroad to further their education even as he stated that most of the girls’ parents were dead as a result of high blood pressure.Osinbajo takes roll callThe day also reminded Osinbajo, an academician, who said that “once a teacher, always a teacher”, as he performed the task of formally presenting the girls to the President. He recalled that the whole country was emotional as they received the girls upon their return.Your worst days ‘re over/govt to take over your education-BuhariIn a voice laden with emotions, Buhari, while receiving the girls, stated that the girls had seen the worst of things the world had to offer.Imagining the horrible experience the girls must have had in the hands of the insurgents for over two years, he, however, said that the worst days were over, promising a new dawn for the girls“These 21 girls will be given adequate and comprehensive medical, nutritional and psychological care and support. The Federal Government will rehabilitate them, and ensure that their reintegration back to the society is done as quickly as possible,”the President said.“Aside from rescuing them, we are assuming the responsibility for their personal, educational and professional goals and ambitions in life. Obviously, it is not late for the girls to go back to school and continue the pursuit of their studies.“These dear daughters of ours have seen the worst that the world has to offer. It is now time for them to experience the best that the world can do for them. The Government and all Nigerians must encourage them to achieve their desired ambitions”.Buhari also revealed that the girls’ release was a product of negotiations between government, Boko Haram and some international agencies.“The release of these 21 girls followed a series of negotiations between Government and the Boko Haram group, brokered by our friends both local and International. Since this Administration assumed office, we have been working towards the safe release of the girls.“The DSS, military and other security agencies have spared no effort to secure our girls. These 21 girls are the manifestation of our doggedness and commitments to the release and return of the Chibok girls.”‘The rest of girls would be rescued’The President also pledged a renewed effort that would see the return of the remaining girls while thanking their parents for their patience and understanding.“While joining their parents to rejoice and praise the Almighty, we shall redouble efforts to ensure that we fulfill our pledge of bringing the remaining girls back home. Already, the credible first step has been taken and Government will sustain the effort until all the remaining girls return safely”, Buhari  said.“The Federal Government appreciates the patience and understanding of the parents of all the abducted Chibok girls. We equally thank Nigerians and the International Community for their support and prayers, and for never losing confidence in our ability to secure the safe release of our girls.“Once again, I congratulate the 21 released girls, their parents, the Chibok community, our security agencies and all Nigerians on this day of delight and rejoicing.”Last lineAs Manu spoke, my eyes spotted Alhaji Adamu Adamu, the minister of education who seated on the high table with Buhari. He never smiled. His mind must have been running riot as he wondered if the girls would have passed their physics and chemistry subjects and in flying colors. But then, the development has thrown up a big challenge to the government that there is need to education the Nigerian child, not just the girl alone for brighter future of the country. Thank goodness that the President who has children who are graduates, was also there to see and hear for himself.ADEKUNLEView All Posts By Adekunle →You might also likeRecommended ByDisclaimerComments expressed here do not reflect the opinions of vanguard newspapers or any employee thereof. You May Like
