MTN Denise alleged transfer of $14billion out of Nigeria
MTN, CEO,Mr. Ferdinand MoolmanSouth Africa’s MTN has denied it illegally transferred $13.9 billion from Nigeria in the latest scandal to hit the telecom firm in its largest market in the continent. The Johannesburg-based firm is facing a parliamentary probe over accusations it connived with senior Nigerian officials to move the funds out of the country without complying with the law.“We would like to reiterate that at no point did MTN Nigeria (MTNN) illegally repatriate funds out of Nigeria or collaborate with Nigerians to loot the external reserves of the country,” Ferdinand Moolman, the chief executive officer of MTNN told the Senate hearing in Abuja on Thursday.“MTNN is a Nigerian company and is proud to be conducting business in Nigeria. It therefore categorically refutes any accusations of money laundering, economic sabotage or tax evasion levied against it,” he added.Moolman said all monies repatriated by the company were in respect of dividend payments and capital divestment originating from legitimate foreign direct investment.“The dividend payments were made to shareholders who imported foreign capital for investment in MTNN,” he said.Moolman also exonerated Nigeria’s Trade and Investment Minister Okechukwu Elenemah from the alleged capital flight.“We would like to state that Dr Elenemah has never been a director or shareholder of MTNN,” he said, adding that the minister had not connived with the company to move funds out of Nigeria. The parliamentary probe followed a motion last month by Dino Melaye, a senator from central Kogi state which called for MTN to be investigated over the alleged illegal transfers.Four local banks were alleged to have been used to move the funds with the help of the trade minister. The probe is the latest setback to hit MTN in Nigeria. The firm was last year slammed with a $3.9 billion fine for failing to cut off 5.1 million unregistered SIM cards, amid fears that some of the affected lines were being used by Boko Haram insurgents. The conflict sparked by the jihadist group has left at least 20,000 dead and forced more than 2.6 million people from their homes since 2009.In June, MTN announced that following negotiations with the Nigerian authorities, it had agreed to pay $1.7 billion as a final settlement.MTN is the largest mobile phone firm in Nigeria, and the country accounts for a third of the group’s total revenue.MTN threatened to pull out during the SIM card row, before the fine was reduced by nearly 70 percent.Relations between Nigeria and South Africa, the continent’s two economic powerhouses, have been strained over recent years on issues including economic rivalry and political friction.South Africa’s growth has been undermined by the slowdown in China and falling commodity prices, while Nigeria, the continent’s top oil producer, has suffered from low oil prices, leading it into recession.

Leicester City Wins Again
Riyad Mahrez struck to give Leicester City a third consecutive Champions League victory as the fairytale Premier League champions edged FC Copenhagen 1-0 on Tuesday. Mahrez’s athletic 40th-minute volley at the King Power Stadium left Claudio Ranieri’s men five points clear in Group G and they are still to concede a goal in the competition. With Club Brugge losing 2-1 at home to Porto in the other group game,Leicester will be assured of a place in the last 16 if they win away to Copenhagen in their next match on November 2. Riyad Mahrez Riyad Mahrez Leicester are struggling domestically, their title defence effectively over after four defeats in eight games, but in Europe they are rekindling memories of their 5,000-1 march to glory last season. Indeed, their tally of points in the Champions League — nine — is one more than they have amassed in the league. Ranieri was particularly indebted to his Copenhagen-born goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who brilliantly swatted away a shot from Andreas Cornelius with seconds of normal time remaining. It was a first defeat in 24 matches for Stale Solbakken’s Copenhagen, but they remain in second place ahead of next month’s return fixture. With Leicester’s fans a little subdued followdomestic defeat — 3-0 at Chelsea last Saturday — it was left to Copenhagen’s supporters to create the pre-match atmosphere. The travelling fans were in fine voice and the Champions League anthem was accompanied by a burst of red flares in the away end that will almost certainly attract the attention of UEFA. On the pitch, though, it was Leicester who carried the greater threat, despite the visitors dominating possession. – Cornelius goes close – The hosts found joy with passes in behind Copenhagen’s full-backs (less so when the ball was hoofed in the air towards Islam Slimani) and it was an approach that yielded the opening goal. Five minutes before half-time, Jamie Vardy lofted a cross towards the far post from the left, Slimani headed it back across goal and Mahrez darted in to beat Robin Olsen with a close-range volley. It was the Algerian winger’s fourth goal of the season and third in three Champions League games. Shy of a Federico Santander shot that dribbled straight into the gloves of Schmeichel, the Danish champions had not really threatened. But they came within a whisker of equalising on the stroke of half-time when Cornelius’s header from Ludwig Augustinsson’s corner missed the left-hand upright by millimetres. Cornelius threatened again early in the second half, his flick working Schmeichel, but Leicester were playing with rediscovered belief, Mahrez seeing a shot blocked by Erik Johansson. Slimani had the ball in the net in the 67th minute when he followed in to head home after Olsen brilliantly touched his shot onto the bar, but he was denied, incorrectly, by an offside flag. The introduction of winger Rasmus Falk lifted Copenhagen and there was one last scare before Leicester could celebrate victory. In the last minute, Santander’s cross from the left picked out Cornelius, but Schmeichel produced a superb one-handed reflex save to keep his countrymen at bay. ing another heavy

Obama : Donald Trump Flattery Over Vladimir Putin is (unprecedented) in America's politics
U.S President Barack Obama has criticized Donald Trump for praising Russian President, Vladmir Putin during his 2016 U.S Presidential campaign, saying his support of the Russian leader is 'unprecedented' in the history of American politics. Adding that he was more concerned about Republican party politicians who have called him soft on Russia now backing Trump’s line. "Mr. Trump rarely surprises me these days," Obama said in a press conference with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the White House on Tuesday. "I'm much more surprised and troubled that you have Republicans ... now supporting and in some cases echoing his positions."He also rejected Donald Trump's allegations that the U.S election is being rigged to favour Democratic party candidate Hillary Clinton. "I have never seen in my lifetime, or in modern political history, any presidential candidate trying to discredit elections and the elections process before even elections have taken place. It's unprecedented," Obama said. "I'd invite Mr. Trump to stop whining and try to make his case to get votes."With three weeks to go until the U.S Presidential elections, the two leaders (Obama and Renzi) also made remarks that can only be interpreted as thinly veiled commentary on the candidacy of Donald Trump. "America was built by immigrants. America is stronger because of immigrants. America is great because of immigrants," Obama said.Renzi spoke of building "bridges, not walls," and appealed for world leaders to look to the future, and not just the past. "There are a lot of people who think politics is only about screaming, fighting each other, creating division. You’re different, Mr. President," Renzi said. "We're different."
